Before the civil war between Bangladesh and West Pakistan, the country was using paper bills issued by the State Bank of Pakistan. Following the war, taka banknotes were released to replace the Pakistani rupee. These taka notes depicted the map of Bangladesh and a picture of the country’s first president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The Bangladesh government released another set of banknotes that featured the national emblem represented by a shapla flower floating on the water, a stalk of rice, stars, and three leaves of jute. On August 15, 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed. Consequently, a new family of banknotes was issued with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait replaced by the Tara Masjid or the Star Mosque. However, on banknotes released between 2000 and 2001, the picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been added back.
New Bangladesh taka banknotes have new designs and enhanced security elements but still bearing Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait. These banknotes are the first to reflect the taka symbol.
