Ghana has introduced a new 1 Cedi coin. This one is special. 1 Cedi is wroth about $0.17 USD. But this coin is more of a banknote and is plated with 1/1000th of an ounce of gold. So the gold value is about 10x the face value. Obviously, this is a collector-oriented product.

There have been novelty notes created in gold and silver. Disney has licensed the use of several characters and images in silver notes. Tom & Jerry can be found on gold notes. And there are examples of US and Euro designs that are in gold and silver. The Ghana 1 Cedi might be the first gold foil that is legal tender.
The 1 Cedi shows a color image of “African Liberty on the obverse and the Ghana coat of arms on the reverse. The design includes a lot of blue ink and small printed features to make it appear more like a banknote than previous gold foil notes. It is supplied in a beautiful folder and includes a Certificate of Authenticity confirming that it is legal tender. Its mintage is limited to 10,000 units. The limited production along with the beauty of the design should make this unusual product a good collector item.
