Curacao is an island country on the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea and the Dutch Caribbean region. The nation is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and forms the Dutch Caribbean along with Aruba and other Dutch islands. From 1815 until 1954, the country was part of the Curacao and Dependencies colony before it became part of the Netherlands Antilles.

Curacao's economy depends on tourism, international trade, and shipping services. Other sectors such as oil refining, oil storage and bunkering, and international financial services also play a major role in the economy. The island's oil refinery, which is leased by the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA, employs 1,000 people and refines oil from Venezuela for export to the US and Asia; however, PDVSA's lease expired in 2019. Additionally, Curaçao is home to Schlumberger, the world's largest oil field services company. The Isla oil refinery is considered responsible for Curaçao's position as one of the top five countries in the world with the highest per capita CO2 emissions.

As a Dutch constituent, Curacao’s currency is the Netherlands Antillean guilder which is subdivided into 100 cents and introduced in the 18th century. Its latest banknotes feature birds on the obverse and the bank logo on the reverse. The birds illustrated are a hummingbird, a flamingo, a refous-collared sparrow, and a bananaquit bird. These notes contain Omron rings, colorful planchettes, gold foil patches, and iridescent printings. They also bear a watermark that reflects the bank logo. Though they come in different colors, the banknotes are in the same of 147 x 66 mm.

In 2010, the  Netherlands Antilles was dissolved and Curacao became an independent state. The Bank van de Nederlande Antillean was renamed the Central Bank of Curacao and Sint Maarten. In November 2020, the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten announced their plan to replace the guilder, however, the implementation was delayed.
